Special Award of Merits

Saskatchewan Baseball Association
Special Award of Merit
Melville Minor Ball Association - October 20, 2001

By Wade S. Walz (The Melville Advance)

Melville’s sporting community is celebrating another honor today.
The Melville Minor Ball Association (MMBA) was recently given a Special Award of Merit by the Saskatchewan Baseball Association (SBA).

The award was based on the association’s involvement in acquiring and hosting the Canada Cup last summer.

SBA representative Greg Brons says it’s a big bonus to have an event like the Canada Cup in this province.

"The Saskatchewan communit5y is definitely a hot spot for baseball. Melville’s achievement of hosting this year’s Baseball Canada Cup received rave reviews from fans. Players, coaches, scouts, and Baseball Canada reps."

"It was a combined effort for the Major Millionaires, the Melville Regional Park Association, and the Terry Puhl Foundation, but we know the driving force behind this movement was the Melville Minor Ball Association."

While MMBA is honored to receive the award, president John Maserek is quick to point out it was, in deed, a joint effort.

"We have to thank everyone involved with bringing the Canada Cup to Melville and all those who helped make the tournament a success… especially the City of Melville, Melville Regional Park, Terry Puhl Foundation, and Major Millionaires, Minor Ball, and all the volunteers."

"Without the tremendous support of everyone involved last year we couldn’t have hosted the event."

Maserek adds they view the award as a community award, which should be received by everyone.

"It took a lot if work and will take a lot of work again this year but we’re proud to be a part of the biggest baseball event in Saskatchewan."

The Canada Cup attracts the top under-17 prospect players in the country for a four-day championship tournament.
