SASKATCHEWAN BASEBALL Association
OFFICIAL of the YEAR 1999 - GERRY QUENNELLE

Gerry became involved in our baseball program as a
member of our Minor Sports Program. He assisted in
renewing our baseball program in many ways. He was
our equipment manager for many years and sat on the
executive for a number of years.
He became Zone 4 Umpire Director in 1995.
At that time because baseball was just becoming
popular again in Zone 4 did not have the number of
umpires required to run a viable baseball program.
Zone 4 had one level 4 umpire, and no level three
umpires, and a limited amount of certified umpires in
1995.
Since he started he has encouraged many umpires in the
zone to become certified and improve their
qualifications to higher levels. One of the more
positive aspects of his tenure is that he has
encouraged many junior officials to become members of
the SBA.
In 1999 Zone 4 had 67 certified umpires. Eight were
level 3 & 4, and fifty-nine were level 1 & 2.
Of the level 1 & 2 the majority are under the age of
20. Gerry has encouraged any youth umpire who is
promising to continue with their certification even if
they are leaving the zone to attend university or
change jobs. He has a very positive attitude when he
is evaluating junior umpires and encourages them to
continue even after a bad game.
He spends many hours on the telephone in January and
February contacting umpires in the zone to encourage
them to attend umping clinics.
Gerry encouraged the senior umps to be evaluated as a
way of improving their technique and thus improved the
quality of umpires in the zone.
