Saskatchewan Baseball Association Builder of the Year - 1998
Bucsis named SBA Builder of the Year
By Wade S. Walz (The Melville Advance)

Murray Bucsis has received one of the highest awards
given annually by the Saskatchewan Baseball
Association (SBA).
The Melville man was named Builder of the Year by the
SBA, along with several other baseball volunteers
recognized for their efforts in the sport.
Although Bucsis knew he had been nominated for the
award, he admits it was a surprise to win.
“Yeah, I heard they nominated me but I had no idea I
would win. I’ve put in a lot of volunteer hours for
minor ball in Melville but I don’t do it to win
awards, I do it for the kids –it’s important for the
youth to have good facilities to play ball in.”
Garnet Keller nominated Bucsis for the award, saying
that he did a lot of great work for Melville’s minor
ball program despite an accident which kept him
sidelined for three months.
“Murray had the misfortune of being involved in an
automobile accident in June and spent three months in
the hospital. During this time Murray continued to
work on the betterment of baseball in Zone 4,” says
Keller.
Bucsis’ credits include helping organize the largest
three day minor ball tournament in Canada, held in
Melville in which his bantam division had 16 teams
from across Saskatchewan and Manitoba competing.
“Murray has been involved in setting up our minor
ball computer system and has spent countless hours
building Melville’s clubhouse, erecting home run
fences and building dugouts.
“He has also found time to coach baseball since 1991.
His teams’ greatest accomplishments have been the
1995 Western Canadian bantam championship and the 1997
Zone 4 bantam elite championship.”
As for Bucsis winning the award, Keller says it’s a
big boost for the local minor ball system to have one
its more dedicated individuals recognized by the
provincial governing body.
